As children growing up in Chicago, my brother and I made our own adventures in a world we created as first friends. We explored neighborhoods, made up games, and always had each other’s back. Each summer we made the four hour car ride to Detroit to stay with our grandmother, Tee. This yearly sojourn would spark my love for learning, travel, and finding human connections. Tee exposed us to brats in Frankenmuth, lunch dates in Windsor, Canada, trips to Cedar Point Amusement Park in Sandusky, Ohio, and a White House tour in Washington, D.C. She taught me to be brave, adventurous, to respect all cultures, and to abide in curiosity. In the years since those summers in Detroit, I take the memory of Tee with me and I hope she is proud of the gadabout I have become.
